Laid under leaf, under branches

Master of Alchemy With ‘Laid Under Leaf’ Patrick Aston has crafted the most exquisitely acute sonic exploration of melancholia. This is breathtakingly beautiful, jewel-like portraits of nature. The dark folk style has much in common with Gravenhurst, but the tones of Dark Leaves are much warmer & all enveloping, like slowly drowning in deep warm water. A number of the songs, if you listen carefully, have echoes of 1980's era The Cure, which marries well with the folk finger-picking guitar. Absolutely captivating. Favorite track: The Edge of the Light.

skyhighdiamonds So hard to select a favourite track because each composition is so carefully crafted and weaves together curious lyrics with soothing guitar and other elemental instrument choices - all delivered so gently. When I hear Fast Wears the Night I become a leaf caught on the surface of a fast flowing woodland stream, completely transported! Can't wait for the live sets, vinyl and CD. Thank you for this beautiful collection <3 Favorite track: Fast Wears The Night.

Matthew Campbell This album kind of hypnotizes me. I feel like I am lessening the experience when I play it in the house. I should take it outside, sit on a fallen tree in the woods, or leaning against a centuries old tombstone beneath an oak tree. But, even sitting on the couch in a cold unfinished basement, it is a spectacular listening experience.

the edge of the light is all we see and all of her land, here with me we reach with our eyes on fire farewell to all light the night coming down where once day grew
3.
dawn weaves a day mid morrow and night the more I could ever lay in dawns early light they only want us to stay laid under leaf under branches they only want us to stay caught underneath, for the day like a stone on the riverbed laid on the ground with moss for my pillowed head and leaves for my bed they only want us to stay laid under leaf under branches they only want us to stay caught under leaf, for the day

when the light is over and the mist in the meadow is low when the light is over on the wind you will hear her call her eyes see all, forever in time her feathers soar, in the midnight sky ever alone and ridden in night her song to the moon will cry from the field and forest eyes as old as fire

for all on this tide the ocean sighs in grey ocean light hear him call all of his touch and all of his kiss is all that he owns all that he owns when the night wind comes the yearn of king tide in whispers the waves will call salt weep to your eyes and they’ll drown out your cries there’s no sea witch who’ll stand on the shore so dark is the land wind call, cruel storm his charm on the sand a bride in his hand as the last good day goes watch over the dawn when the night wind blows the yearn of king tide in whispers the waves will call salt weep to your eyes and they’ll drown out your cries call on the ocean bride only reason is tithe he has no rite this time

as darkness fills the western sky and sleep, the twin of death, is nigh what soothes the soul, at set of sun? a pleasant thought, of duty done when i will weave these words in holier light I yearn but only dark is here fast wears the night must the pastoral, night slumbers be the shepherds by the eastern tree broken & brief, with dreams that tell of ravaged flock, and poisoned well when I will weave these words in holier light I yearn but only dark is here fast wears the night be still my soul, fast wears the night soon shall day dawn, in holier light old faces, ancient hearts, be there and well-known voices thrill the air

they gather in the setting sun the cold has caught their wings, they turn tomorrow's wind weighs heavy they know they know they sing above the autumn storm and heed a call from far away and wander on a western wave they know they know they were me, whose song is free they were me, whose song is old they never get old ocean under tender skies veiled in the fading light drawn unto the eventide they roam they know they were me, whose song is free they were me, whose song is old they never get old they gather in the setting sun the cold has caught their wings, they turn tomorrow's wind weighs heavy they know they know
